Should I?

Hmmmmm, a fellow Blogger asked me recently to blog on Car Maintenance. I know I am in this automotive maintenance line for donkey years on and off. Being in the automotive maintenance line, the knowledge gained does not stop after the course as it is essential to keep oneself as updated as possible on latest automotive maintenance techniques and new technologies. Cars are ever changing, going from mechanical to electrical to electronic with lots of electronic components as part of the overall system to keep the engine and other parts ticking away smoothly. Basically the cars nowadays are run by computers. I am a bit behind this as I came off this line way back in the mid 2000s though I did continue to do minor maintenance work on and off for friends, relatives and of course my own cars. I tried to keep myself as updated as possible though.

Maybe I should give it, this car maintenance matters, a go in my blog, to generate some interests in whoever visits my blog and which may be a help to them in similar situations or to help sort out their problems or just learn a thing or two. I guess we have to share our experiences with the rest of the world, if not, to give back to society, to whom we belong. We are living among human after all.

I may give advices or suggestions to the best of my knowledge and through my experience as an automotive technician and hope there are others who have similar experiences, can share with me and those following my blog.

Disclaimer: I do have to point out, though, that I cannot guarantee the information given by me or other drop-in volunteers, will work for your individual cases because some analysis will need the actual testings, hearing, seeing and even feeling for proper diagnosis. But with the general information presented, you should be able to understand your vehicle problems more clearly and thus not easily fleeced by workshop operators. A word of caution when referring your vehicle to workshops for repair. NEVER EVER tell them what is wrong or what to change, even if you feel you are right. Just tell them about the problems. It is THEIR job to analyse / diagnose, inform you of the intended repair and get your approval to do whatever necessary to get your pride and joy working smoothly again. After all, you are paying for their professional consultation and actual repair work itself, besides cost of spares.

OK, now maybe I should give a background on how it all started for me.

I was, like most teenagers way back in the 1960s, maybe late 1960s, curious about things around them. I was just slightly mechanically inclined back then. I will tell you why I decided to go into this line.

My dad used to be a weekend tinkerer on his own cars. He knew enough to do simple servicing like cleaning contact points, checking engine oil levels, fuses and some electrical items on his cars. He was more in the electronic line as he used to do repairs on electronic stuff, like radios, record players, commercial jukeboxes where you have to insert coins to play music and songs of your choice. That time we did not have transistors but big vacuum tubes, a bulb like thingy which later evolved into transistors which we know today. Those were the days.

Anyway, I used to watch him doing stuff on his cars and he tried his best to explain to me what he was doing. Of course I had no clue. Hey! I was a teenager then and I was not expected to have interest in this kind of stuff. The more I watched the more I get interested. Hmmm, to me, getting things to work when they stop working seemed interesting. I slowly started to be curious about stuff then, mostly mechanical stuff.

One day, he asked me, albeit casually (as if I know what to do), to clean the "contact points". No problem! I started removing some parts and start looking for the "contact point" to clean. Hmmm, Hey, they looked different. Where are they? I could not find anything similar which I had seen when he was doing it. Then, ..... He came over after a while and to his horror, Oooooophs!!!! I have removed the wrong parts and no wonder I did not see anything familiar. He looked at me. I guess he must be thinking, "Boy, you still have a lot to learn"!. Period! Finally he pointed out to me where the darned thing was. Whew.......

Yes, I did finally learn more about where to look for the "contact points" over time. Then came the "destruction" stage I had to go through to learn more about anything mechanical about cars, maybe out of curiosity. Maybe....

I used to have a small collection of model cars, those metal diecast models from Corgi, Matchbox, Dinky, Solido with scales from 1:70 to 1:24 I think. What I would do was to pry them open to see the insides. Yes, I did destroy some of my precious collection back then, but then, I learned something about how those tiny parts were assembled and how they worked. Then I started modifying those poor diecast models. The rest was history.

After completing my Senior Cambridge (yes, those were the days where SPM did not exist then) in 1970, I joined this technical institute in Kuching to take up a 3-Year full time course in Automotive Engineering. That was where I learned more in details about car maintenance. We had to learn the theory part, on the various components that made up the car and how they worked with each other, an essential part of the learning process so we can understand what went wrong if any component breaks down and be able to diagnose the faults correctly. Over the next 2 to 3 years, my interest grew so much that I knew this was going to be my bread and butter job in the future years ahead.

I learned fast and furious to get whatever knowledge I could get from the instructors and from technical books. I achieved Distinctions for the subjects in City and Guilds examinations as a reward. That was way back in 1973. Yes, I admit I am old now but still functioning quite normally.

Towards end of that year, Sarawak Shell Berhad recruiters came over to Kuching to recruit vehicle mechanics for their pool of company cars, motorcycles, tractors, vans and trucks. We went through, if i recalled correctly, 2 stages of interviews by different interviewers and told to wait for the results in a week or 2.

Tick tock, tick tock, time passed and we were all anxiously waiting for the results. Finally the results came. They only selected 2 out of more than 30 from our batch. I was one of the lucky 2. The other one, my classmate missed the opportunity because he did not receive the appointment letter as he has gone back to his kampong in another place. I went over to Miri to work in the company in 1974. The rest was history. While still in the same company, I only left the automotive line in 1988 where I joined the offshore maintenance team to do offshore maintenance work, still mechanical in nature though.

However, after office hours, during weekends and holidays I still did car maintenance for friends, relatives, friends' friends and sometimes strangers who has heard about my service, even my bosses' private cars. I charged them for the service of course. Hey! I got to feed my family and to compensate them for the time I spent on the cars instead of quality time with them.

As the years went by, I continued to do that in order to keep myself updated on the later model cars that came into the market. That was the most enriching experience of my life.

Now, over here in JB and due to space constraints I cannot do major work on my own cars. I still tinker with minor ones though. I leave the major ones done at nearby workshops as they have the necessary equipment to handle them. (I sold off my equipment which I have back then when I migrated to JB end 2008).

Well, that is how it started. Next ..........

Safety and Security Concerns in Johor Bahru

Previously there are talks on safety and security concerns in Johor Bahru due to its "high crime rate". If compared to other cities in Malaysia and using the population - crime ratio, there is actually not much difference, just that since JB is more populated, a popular place for visitors, it is more prominent in the news.

When I first "migrated" over in December 2008, yes, there is not much difference in term of the crime rate. Since a year or 2 ago, the authorities have been implementing very effective measures to reduce the crime rate to a manageable level. Police presence are now very visible, street lighting improved and now people are less concerned about security issues. No doubt crimes are still committed but they are quickly dealt with by the authorities.

Johor Bahru now is as safe as most safe cities in Malaysia. The difference is startling and all due to the authorities making that effort to clean up the city. Most visitors will feel safe going about in the city and its outskirt areas.

Now more efforts need to be concentrated on keeping the city and its outskirt clean. People's mindset need to change and each one of us is responsible to keep JB a clean city.

Johor Bahru Developments

The pace of development in Johor state, especially in and around Johor Bahru, is at a fast pace. It is aiming to be one of the Must Visit state when anyone steps onto its soil. Besides new shopping complexes, there are theme parks, educational City, medical City currently being developed, some of which are completed and in operation. There are beaches and resorts too. Johor Bahru has much to offer.

Raffles University (Johor Bahru)

On the 18th of April 2012, my daughter and I went to pay this university a visit to inquire about their courses and all that. This is a full fledged university where they will issue their own degrees. They have some other universities set up around the region. The current temporary campus is located in the city centre. Once the facilities at Nusajaya are completed they will be moving to the new location, tentatively towards end of 2013.

A friendly staff briefed us on the history and the courses they are offering at the university, the estimated fees, facilities available and other relevant information. Its good that the government approved course in Business Management is available currently. Other courses are still awaiting government approval.

Since my daughter has gone through a year of business studies at another college, we were hoping for her to get some exemptions for her first year. We were informed to get some relevant supporting documents from the previous college to be submitted to them for their considerations.

Now it is up to my daughter to decide if she wants to go through this university if she is accepted. She is quite keen on it so I assume it is a go.

Now we are waiting for the previous college to issue my daughter her examination result slip at least to be submitted to Raffles for their considerations for exemptions.

The planned in take is on the June intake.

BR1M

I went to join the crowd of oldies and youngies to collect my BR1M RM500 voucher on 27th February 2012 at our local community Hall at TUTA, Skudai, Johor. It was about 8 minutes drive away from where I was staying. It was noted on the envelope that we had from 10am till 2pm to collect.

I went early, hoping to be able to get a place in the front of the queue and but when I arrived, I found the place packed with people of all sizes, shapes, height and whatnot.

A section of the crowd

We were told to sit and wait for our turn and, once the people sitting in front move forward, we had to do the same. Then I noticed some late comers came from the side and started to squeeze into the standing queue in front. Really no civic mindedness and some were not senior citizens.

Just before my turn came, one official announced that the 2 queues we were on, were only for getting the serial number and confirmation of our identification and the third row to collect the vouchers. What the hell! Why can't they do it in one go to save the people from re-queuing all over in the voucher collection row. How do they expect to clear the crowd this way. To me, this arrangement was bad and the whole process was not properly organised and coordinated. If they can register and issue the voucher in the same row, the hall would not be so crowded.

As the crowd grew and the heat became unbearable due to poor ventilation, even though there are fans on both sides of the hall. An elderly lady almost fainted and was quickly moved to the side entrance for fresh air.

There was one time the crowd was getting restless and some of the recipients started shoving their way to the front of the queues. One official pleaded with the people to queue and be orderly. When his advice was not taken seriously and they continued shoving, the official lose his cool and started shouting at the group. There was an verbal exchange between the official and the group. Anyway, this group of uncivic-minded people should have followed the advice as others had been queuing as directed. It is just a matter of time, they would get their vouchers.

Anyway, that is not the end of the process. They still have to go to the bank to cash the vouchers, another long queue. What a day!

The issuance of the vouchers by the government officials.

Opening 2 or more Facebook Accounts using one Browser

Normally Firefox will not allow you to open 2 Facebook accounts in the same browser. Now you can open 2 Facebook accounts at the same time, with different email addresses.

There are various ways of doing that. You can try to open it in another browser, e.g. Internet Explorer if your current browser is Firefox, use browser that has that features, e.g. Chrome or use Multifox if you are using Firefox. Multifox is a Firefox Extension and can be downloaded and installed easily.

Once installed, you have few options to open a new Firefox window or new profile. The new profile will be numbered accordingly to indicate the number of profiles opened by Firefox. The new windows will be independent from each other.

Now you can open your other Facebook accounts as normal in the new profile window. This is also useful if you have to open several web based emails from the same provider, e,g gmail or hotmail.

Molex Far East South

This 5.45am, I sent my daughter to the bus terminal for her to catch the bus to her work place in Singapore. She and her friend started working there since yesterday. One of the biggest, this US company manufactures electrical and electronic components for worldwide distribution.

The factory is located in Pioneer District in Singapore. It is very near (walking distance) from Joo Koon MRT station with UMW and Union Containers to her left and right respectively.

Her position there is to do quality checks on the various components. According to her, this company employs a lot of senior citizens and her boss is very friendly and mixes a lot with his employees. He even takes lunches together with them.

Hopefully, she will gain a lot of experience there, which will benefit her in the longer term since her interest is in business.

Success

Finally I saw the test post appearing in my Facebook page.... Hope it stays that way....

Testing Testing

Now I am going to test if my blog posting goes to Facebook automatically... here goes nothing....

Linking my Blog to Facebook Pain

I want to link my blog to Facebook so an post that I add to my blog will appear automatically in Facebook. Followed some Facebookers' instructions but does not work. Now trying to link through 'Networked Blogs' to see if it works.... Praying...

Roaming in Singapore

Not the person but calls roaming for my daughter's handphone number. Since she will be working there, I went to DiGi to get the roaming facility activated for her. Since her line is basically new (6 months required) I have to pay a deposit and they will keep a copy of my passport.

Why is that so troublesome to apply of roaming for a new line when my other DiGi line has roaming and my payments are up to date. The sweet lady replied, "It's a new main line. Either wait for 6 months or pay deposit and submit a copy of your passport".

Grrr, haiyah... I went back to bring along my passport to have it done. What a hassle!

What happen to Yahoo Mails?

Sometime in November 2011. When I clicked to download yahoo mails to my desktop client, these 'emails' kept on pouring in, like nobody's business, thousands of them. Just unbelievable. It never ended so I just closed the email client. What gives?

My Daughter - Job in Singapore

My handphone rang and I answered. It was from my Princess. She is in Singapore now and will be heading back to JB soon. She informed me that she will be working, starting from tomorrow. Congratulations Jacinta on the new job.

She is someone who will go far to get what she wants. She has her plans laid out for the next 10 to 15 years. Its good she has heeded my advice to think ahead and plan ahead so she can achieve her dreams.

She wants to be as self supporting as she can and I am really proud of her. I can only wish her all the best in what she plans to do, to chart her paths, to see her dreams fulfilled.

In the pix on the right, she is the one in Blue.

Owwwh!

I need to update my profile. Haizzzzz.

Things have changed since I last visited this blog. Since I can snatch a bit of time here and there, I better do a bit of updating before i go into another period of hibernation. Just joking!

Time waits for no man, including woman.

Chinese New Year

I spent my time in Kuching, Sarawak for my Chinese New Year with my daughter. Yeah, I did get my kind of 'jet lag' on arrival, meaning, I was worn out...

Anyway, I could not really relax as I have to do cleaning up on the house. The house belongs to my MIL. As she was not around, I just did all the clearing up and washing and preparing the rooms we would be staying in.

The days went by without too much excitement, at least until my other siblings and their families arrived. Then its food food food day in and day out. Well, do not blame us as we were away from Kuching for a while and we missed Kuching food.

CNY finally came and gave us rain from midnight till a week or so later. That is the Water Dragon making its grand entrance. Don't play play huh! It was consiered the wettest CNY i knew for a long long time. We did not really go visiting except to a couple of houses. My main intention is to look-see look-see and taste the original Sarawakian food.

CNY came and went and we went our separate ways back to where we came from. We were the last to leave Kuching, that is 31st of January, back to home sweet home in JB.

To sum it all, a boring trip....

2012 - I am Back!

It has been a while since I last posted in this blog of mine. Guess I am pure lazy.

Time has changed and this is 2012 now. Time to buck up and do something to keep our world spinning, spinning with my rantings, my curses, my whatnots...

Comparing to others I considered my life OK, though I would like it to be much better than it is now. Anyway, i must not be too greedy as to ask for too much. I do not want to end up in Tg. Rambutan with the rest of those worry-free residents. Hmm, maybe I should consider that option? Nah! I still need to rant till kingdom come.

Anyway, time to go for now, while i look through what I have to post next. Hmm....
